Workshop convening community and scientific management initiatives for Maunalua Bay, including conservation planning, human use monitoring, coral reef health land based pollution, invasive species removal, fishery monitoring, habitat restoration. Workshop final talk story session provides an opportunity to explore how local communities are taking the lead in marine management and restoration efforts.

Importance: Demonstrates a community-based model for marine management in Hawaii. Malama Maunalua is a community-based nonprofit organization whose mission is to protect and restore a healthy and productive Maunalua Bay through community kuleana. Once extremely rich and productive, Maunalua Bay has deteriorated over the last 50 years. The community is taking the lead in bringing the Bay back to its former health through strategic partnerships and targeted actions. Major objectives include (1) developing a widespread sense of place and stewardship for Maunalua Bay among residents, (2) launching conservation planning, research and monitoring Initiatives through community support & partnerships with agencies and NGOS, and (3) demonstrating how impaired coastal and marine resources can be restored by an urban community.

The State Coral Reef Initiative, Land Based Sources Local Action Strategy and the Hawaii Coral Reef Initiative, two of the leading management teams in Hawaii for coral reefs, have recently established focused support for coral reef scientific and management efforts in Maunalua Bay. This focus has developed around a strong community commitment to improve the health of the Bay. Given this new attention, having a workshop that would provide an agenda for the various partners to get together and share what has been done and discuss how to move forward together represents a valuable opportunity to effectively build successful management.
