FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Hawai‘i Conservation Alliance and the
Pacific Writers’ Connection Launch the “My Hawaii” Story Project

The Hawai‘i Conservation Alliance (HCA) and the Pacific Writers’ Connection (PWC) have embarked on a writing contest entitled the “My Hawaii” Story Project. This project is an education outreach endeavor for middle schools and intermediate schools statewide. HCA and PWC hope students (grades 6 to 8) will describe their feelings about Hawaii’s environment in a 1,000 word essay, or 150 word poem.

This project is ambitious and pioneering in concept and scope. It will be conducted entirely online; a first for Hawaii. The project closes May 17, 2007. Winners will be announced on July 1, 2007. The 25 best written contributions will be provided with a half-day writers’ workshop, a book, and other awards.

“We hope to make this an annual event, thereby building a record of youth writings and thoughts about the environment over time,” says Dr. Christopher Puttock, HCA Program Coordinator. "The Pacific Writers’ Connection provides creative programs that encourage and inspire young writers. Collaborating with HCA on this project, we anticipate that children will engage in the pleasure and power of writing about their environment," said Dr. Takiora Ingram, Executive Director of PWC.
