HCAF Carbon Reduction and Offset Fund

HCAF has set a carbon neutral goal for the 2010 Hawai’i Conservation Conference (HCC). To this end, $5 of your registration will be dedicated to our Carbon Reduction & Offset Fund to provide grant support for carbon reduction and offset projects in Hawai’i. We ask that you make a voluntary donation to offset your travel and lodging carbon emissions. Help us achieve our goal of offsetting the HCC's estimated 370 ton carbon footprint.

Yes, I want to make a voluntary donation to the HCAF Carbon Reduction & Offset Fund
($5 suggested minimum donation)

Your donation will be put into a fund to support carbon reduction and sequestration projects in Hawai'i. When the Carbon Reduction & Offset Fund accrues sufficient funds, the HCAF will announce the grant program parameters and issue a request for proposals.

DONATIONS
By Check: Payable to "Hawaii Conservation Alliance Foundation". Write "2010CO" in the memo field.

Donation Guidance
Many websites offer a “carbon calculator” that provide quick estimates of carbon output, but often it’s not clear what data are used to make these calculations. To help you determine your personal “share” of the HCC’s carbon footprint, and how much you may choose to contribute to the fund, we have provided calculations based on two categories of programs in Hawai’i: energy efficiency projects that reduce carbon output and native forest restoration projects that sequester carbon. Please note that these two types of projects are used simply for illustrative purposes and have not been pre-selected for receiving grant support from HCAF; grant recipients will be determined via a formal granting process.

* Technical assistance in calculating the offset values was provided by Evolution Sage.

1) Energy Efficiency Offset calculations based on Evolution Sage’s energy and water efficiency programs (370 tons offset = $6,660 @ $18/ton).
2) Native Koa Forest Carbon Sequestration based on a draft report written by Christian P. Giardina (Institute of Pacific Islands Forestry, USDA Forest Service) regarding the restoration potential of the Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on the Big Island, located on the windward slope of Mauna Kea. The calculations were done by Loyal Mehrhoff of the USGS (Center Director, Pacific Island Ecosystems Research Center, Biological Resources Discipline) and Kevin Vaccarello (Evolution Sage) (plant 3,541 trees on 18 acres @ $5/ea = 370 tons offset or $17,705 @ $47.85/ton).
