The 16th Annual Hawai'i Conservation Conference was held July 29-31, 2008 at the Hawai'i Convention Center in Honolulu. Presented by the Hawai'i Conservation Alliance, this conference is the largest gathering of people actively involved in the protection and management of the natural environment in Hawai'i and the Pacific Region. There were over 900 registered participants, 52 volunteers and 42 exhibitors. The theme, Island Ecosystems: The Year of the Reef, ran throughout the conference, particularly in the keynote and plenary presentations by Dr. Sylvia Earle and Dr. Elliott Norse and the public lecture by Dr. Earle and Nainoa Thompson. Other speakers included Peter Vitousek of Stanford University and Bryan Harry, Director of the Pacific West Region (retired), National Park Service.
